Digital Television For Beginners

By Armadeus Cornelius

It is now possible to have access to more television channels than ever before due to digital television. There are also more options of how you receive the channels with programmes delivered by aerial, satellite dish, cable and phone line with broadband. Some channels are free of monthly charges and contracts and others are only available if you are prepared to commit to a monthly subscription. Many providers are also offering On Demand services where you can watch the programme or movie when ever you like sometimes at no additional cost and sometimes on a Pay Per View basis. High Definition channels are also available with and without monthly subscription.

There are free channels available from the BBCs and ITVs Freesat, Skys Freesat, Freeview, and Virgin Medias cable service if you rent a phone line. Monthly subscription services are available from Sky Digital, Virgin Media, BT Vision and Tiscali TV.

Freeview

Freeview digital television broadcasts are replacing the normal analogue terrestrial television broadcasts received by an aerial throughout the UK. To receive Freeview you will first of all need to be in an area where it is available and then you will have to have a suitable aerial and either a Freeview set top box or a television with freeView built in. Apart from having to pay the UK television licence Freeview is free of any other charges and offers 48 channels of television and 24 channels of radio.

The old analogue broadcasts are currently being switch off region by region around the UK and being replaced by Digital broadcasts. This process is known as the Digital Switch Over and is expected to be completed throughout the UK by 2012. If you are still watching the old analogue channels when your region switches over you will have buy a Freeview set top box or replace your TV as a minimum. This will apply to every TV, DVD recorder and Video recorder that doesnt have a digital tuner. Alternatively you may decide to receive your digital TV via another method.

The Digital Switch Over might not affect you if you are currently receiving all of your television programmes via Freesat, BT Vision, or Tiscali in which case you wont need to do anything.

Top Up TV

It is possible to add additional subscription channels to the free channels that are available on Freeview with Top Up TV via your aerial. It doesnt require any additional equipment other than the card that slots in to the card slot on your existing PVR set top box. It costs just 9.99 per month without any contract tie in. There is a Movie channel, a sports channel and an on demand channel of programmes that are automatically downloaded to your set top PVR for you to watch at your convenience.

Cable TV by Virgin Media

To receive Virgin Medias Digital TV channels via cable you must first live in an area that can offer this option. You will also have to be willing to at least switch your phone line to Virgin Media to receive a basic 45 channels for free. If you are willing to pay 19.50 per month then over 165 channels are available and there are other cheaper options with less channels. Every television that is connected to cable will have to have a compatible set top box to receive the programmes. So if you have multiple televisions in your house then you will need one for each television at an additional discounted monthly cost.

Virgin media also offer an on demand service where you can access a huge library of programmes and movies some are provided free and some are available on a pay per view basis. Some of the on demand content is in HD.

Sky Digital TV

There will be an additional cost for the supply and installation of each additional set top box and there will be an additional monthly subscription cost for each set top box required. So this could work out to be quite costly.

There is usually a charge for providing and installing the satellite dish and the set top box. Sky Digital also has an On Demand service that is available via the set top box and the internet. Sky Anytime is free of charge and offers a selection of films, documentaries, entertainment channels etc. Sky Box Office offers the latest films for a small charge on demand using the Sky Digital set top box. It is also possible access hundreds of films via your PC that you will have to download to your PC and then you can watch them on your PC or on your television. To watch them on your TV you will either need to copy them to a DVD Disc for playing on your DVD player that is attached to your TV or a you will need a Media Centre so that you can stream the data directly to your PC.

Freesat Television

Freesat television broadcasts are available in two forms one provided by Sky and the other from a joint venture of the BBC and ITV. Both options require a satellite dish and set top box. The BBC and ITV version can also be received by a television with an integrated Freesat tuner. The installation of the satellite dish is subject to the same possible problems as detailed in the Sky Digital TV paragraph above. There aren't any monthly subscription charges but you have to pay for the Set Top Box, Dish and installation. If you already have a Sky satellite dish with unused connections then you wont need to pay for a dish and installation.

The Freesat option from the BBC and ITV also offers a small amount of free high definition television broadcasts if the HD set top box is purchased.

Freesat set top boxes for the BBC and ITV version are available from 49 and 129 with a Satellite Dish and installation. The standard set top boxes have a standard definition picture and provide over 140 television channels that are free of monthly subscription. The Freesat HD set top boxes on their own start from 129 and about 229 if bought with a dish that is installed. If a Freesat compatible TV is purchased then you will still need the satellite dish but not the set top box.

There are in excess of 240 standard definition television channels on Freesat from Sky, Sky Freesat is obtainable for an initial payment of 75 and then there arent any further payments required. High definition television channels are not available on Skys Freesat.

BT Vision TV

BT Vision is provided using a broadband connection and a BT Home Hub router which is then wirelessly connected to a wireless receiver which is connected to your television. The BT vision television service offers Freeview and an on demand service of entertainment and movies. If you already use BTs broadband then the Home Hub Router is supplied without any cost.

It is possible to either pay for every programme that you view or you can pay a monthly amount for a bundle of programmes each month. If your broadband provider isnt BT then the you will have to pay 29.36 for the set top box and 29.36 for it to be installed. The basic package doesnt have any charges each month you just pay for what you view. BT Vision also offer several different bundles that include 45 channels of Freeview channels, Kids Programmes, Music, Sports and a limited number of Films from a monthly charge of 13.70 to 19.57.

Tiscali TV

Tiscali TV offers a mixture of digital television channels and on demand entertainment, movies and music that are received via an aerial and or phone line. Tiscali TV isn't available in all areas of the country so check with Tiscali for details. There are over 70 channels of digital television and radio channels available and over 1000 on demand movies. Packages start from 19.99 and include 8Mb broadband and phone line rental.

Fetch Television

Fetch television is another non subscription service that provides 48 channels of Freeview and access to over a 1000 standard definition and high definition on demand programmes and films that can be downloaded when you choose and streamed to your television. You will need a Fetch television PVR which is a Freeview box and high definition media centre, a computer and broadband. The media centre allows you to access films that you have downloaded to your PC and play them on your television. Fetch television set top boxes start from just under 130.

IP Television and Television On Demand

There are many programmes and movies that can be downloaded via broadband to your PC and then you can copy them to a DVD disc or it can be wirelessly streamed to a media centre that is connected to your television. There are high definition programmes and films that can down loaded via the internet. Television broadcasters such as the BBC, Sky, ITV and many other UK and Worldwide television companies now have content that is available to be downloaded when you choose. Some of this content is free of charge and some chargeable.

Conclusion

The options are almost endless with so many choices. Some of these choices may not be an option but nonetheless the choice is greater than ever before with delivery by Cable, Satellite Dish, Phone Line, Broadband, and Aerial. Whether you are prepared to pay a monthly charge may narrow the options but if you are then you also have to decide if you are prepared to pay extra for HD television broadcasts. IP television offers an interesting possibility but is restricted by our creaking copper cables ability to deliver the content fast enough and reliably enough. To benefit from all of the advantages of Digital Television you will also need a high definition LCD television or Plasma television. - 33366

HDTV: The World's New Broadcasting

By Mel Loewe

HDTV, or high-definition television, is a system of digital television broadcasting that offers higher resolution than standard-definition TV. It is broadcast digitally, as opposed to analog broadcasting.

As bandwidth and standards for television programming have changed over the decades, high definition television options have been adopted by the Federal Communication Commission and TV industry.

Adoption of this type of broadcasting was slow to be picked up. Standardization was a difficult process due to technical and economic reasons, which prevented satellite distribution and recording. Japan, nonetheless, first made the switch from analog to digital, high-definition TV airing in 2007.

Find The Best Digital HD Cable TV Providers In Your Area

Europe followed suit and first introduced the technique by airing Vienna New Year's concert in HD on the HD1 channel in 2004. The U. S. Has also made strides in developing high-def programming. It was first introduced to the market in the 90's by the Digital HDTV Grand Alliance, with the first broadcast airing in 1996 out of North Carolina. The country is working to make a full switch away from standard-definition television.

Particular frame sizes and rates, as well as scanning systems, characterize HDTV. As a result of such specifications and technological advances, the resolution is nearly twice as high as standard-definition TV, which creates much better picture quality.

HD television requires specific equipment, including a HD-ready television, tuner and cable box with cable card slot. Because equipment specifications vary by location, it is best to consult with cable professionals before purchase or installation.

Amongst worldwide TV viewers and customers, one of the most well-liked features of HDTV is recording capabilities. TiVo is the most famous version of such a feature, and it allows you to record and view more than one program at the same time. This also allows viewers to record programs while watching others at the same time.

In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission requires that cable companies provide customers with a set-top box for HD customers as a means of recording and storing.

Traditionally, these television products have been available for in-store purchase with in-home installation. Now, however, online purchases are becoming more common and available around the country.

High-def TV sets can range in price from as low as four hundred dollars to more than five thousand dollars, depending on the retailer and model. Some have been sold for as much as fifteen thousand dollars. It is expected that as high-definition television becomes increasingly popular, prices will begin and continue to drop, making it easier and more attainable for most consumers.

Despite higher prices and the need for new equipment, many customers are ditching their analog TV sets to go digital. They cannot resist the higher picture quality, even on smaller screens. Companies enjoy the ability to "multicast", or the ability air multiple signals and information at the same time with the same bandwidth. In spite of the major disadvantage of having to invest in new equipment and lack of compatibility between analog and digital system, high-def systems are selling well and appear to be the new system to have. - 33366

Analog And Digital In Simple Terms

By Edward McKellen

Lots of people talk these days about digital television, but very few actually know what is the difference between analog and digital television. Actually the only difference is the way the signal is transmitted. Analog television signal is transmitted very much like radio signals. The video signal of analog television is AM, and the audio is FM. Because of this, there can be annoying interferences in the signal, depending on meteorological conditions or geographical location.

The resolution and image quality are also restricted, because there are certain bandwidths assigned to analog TV channels. The analog signal is the United States follows the NTSC standard. This had been adopted in the 1940's, and served well since then, but nobody thought at that time that about color television. One major weakness of the NTSC standard is color implementation, so it is no wonder a lot of people call "Never Twice The Same Color" the NTSC standard.

On the other hand digital TV signal is transmitted very similar to computer data: there are two kinds of signal, "on" or "off". This way, the user either sees an image, or not. Gradual signal loss is an unknown term in the era of digital TV: it has no difference how close or how far away the transmitter is from the television, the viewer either sees the exact image, or sees nothing.

Digital TV format has been designed considering all main factors of television signal: B/W, color and audio can be transmitted as progressive or interlaced signal. Basically this means the signal content has greater integrity and flexibility.

Because digital TV signal is made out of "bits", the same bandwidth one analog TV signal requires can transmit digital signal of much higher quality, and there will be even some extra space left. Broadcasters can use this space for extra video, audio or text signals.

This way broadcasters using digital technology can supply more features, like surround sound, multiple language audio or text using the same bandwidth a standard analog TV signal requires. Digital TV has one more advantage: it is able to transmit High Definition (HDTV) signal.

Unlike analog TV, digital technology is also able to broadcast programming in a true wide screen (16x9) format. This means the shape of the picture is very much like a movie screen, so the viewers can see a movie just as the director intended to be seen. Those who watch sports can see more action in one camera shot: it is possible to view the entire length of a football field without having the sensation that it is far away from the camera. The 16x9 format means there will be no more black bars on the top and the bottom of the wide screen image.

In the United State, the date of the digital transition was June 12, 2009. This day all analog TV signals went black. Analog televisions became useless, unless there was an analog-to-digital converter connected to them. The transition was originally scheduled to 2006, but authorities postponed the transition with 3 years because they realized the consumers were not ready. - 33366

Digital TV Rapidly Increase As Analog Signal Continues To Phase Out

By Mel Loewe

A big deal of television set right now in the United States electronics retailers is digital TV or DTV. US in fact were the first country to broadcast it way back 1998 that basically initiated the idea towards other countries to follow the US illustration of their systems. Most of the stores then laid areas for digital television sets alone as they know that changes are coming.

So people may presume about the thought that if you are not situated in United States, it naturally means that you are probably using still a normal TV that is also an analog one. That might appear fine despite the hype but considering for its replacement to new digital product is a good idea. There is actually a proliferation of such products now so why not opt for this change?

You cannot deny that you have experienced most probably that poor reception with that old TV. There are hinges which potentially can be improved and the fuzzy, low and grainy state can be wiped out in the system. Using the digital signal, you have the assurance of a clear picture when compare to your analog. Even before 1950, there are already reviews about the many improvements.

Find The Best Digital Cable TV Providers In Your Area

There are many factors that can affect the clarity without leaving the blame to the signal type. First is inclement weather. Second is a too far area because that will make it hard to catch the signal in your antenna disregarding its size. If it is cable or satellite you are using, there might be no disturbance in the flow of your TV screen as you watch shows. The reason for that is because the innovation already deals with improvement of the digital reception.

The confusing part is the advance forms that most digital have. People who can understand the field might wonder the idea about its digital signal. For those who are not aware, the medium after all was from analogs. Only that the antenna was set up in each community with different stations. It is somehow like that of radio signals and homes shall receive single and composite video signal only separates with the sound.

It was twelfth of June 2009 when television stations completed the transitions in analog to broadcasting digital. Though that was scheduled February 17 for business reasons of increasing their sales, they still have undergone it just months of waiting.

Some television companies have agreed to map the related areas and decided to more detailed measurements of digital television reception. Digital broadcasting networks have complemented digital TV broadcasting in the same manner with the total 101-sub transmitter stations. With that 101, a new 48 sub-transmitter mainly built with no existing analogue sub-transmitter stations in each households in order to receive the broadcast in their antenna.

Now that most of people have big screens for digital TV, users might consider the use of signal preamplifier since it works wonders when the signal degrades. Make sure that you have proper connections with your cable because that will greatly affect the strength of your signal. Another benefit of doing that checking is that it will soon let you achieve the quality picture for a digital transformation you've been longing to experience. The massive change in technology indeed now works particularly with digital over analog. - 33366

Installing Digital DJ Software? Read These Tips

By Rose Gilbert

Once you have picked out which digital DJ software bundle to use, you have to choose the computer on which you wish to test it. You do not necessarily require a CPU with the fastest processor. Such software will run nice on a 1.2 ghz processor.

Hard drive storage capacity is significant here. You require a lot of capacity as you have to store 1000s of tracks. Your hard disk must be a big one and be able to store more than 120 GB of tracks. The more storage it has, the better it is for you.

Sound is one of the most important things for you. A sound card has to be chosen carefully. You can either establish an external or an internal sound card. There are various types of them available. You should select a high quality one.

A PC or a laptop has to be booked only for the PCDJ and should not be shared with someone. You should restrict the machine to only one use that is for functioning the digital DJ software. Do not make use of it for anything else.

If you already have a PC that you intend to use for this, you should remove the other programs and reformat the computer before setting up the Digital DJ Software.

You need to rip the music from a CDROM to change it to MP3 format to store in your hard disk. For this you should keep the ripping quality to be 1.92kbps or more. Higher is usually better here.

PCDJ software does not need you to have the best configuration in your computer but you should know the minimal requirements that are listed on the developer's internet site. You can also check out several free trial software.

Your computer's memory should be at least 512 MB for the PCDJ to function fine. You should have a storage capacity that is big enough to store 1000s of tracks without any trouble. Also, you must make sure there are no legal restrictions on ripping music. - 33366
