Connect Your Digital TV With Other Household Appliances

By Niamh Connor

Around twenty years ago, the internet crawled into our lives and, in a moment, the world seemed to shrink. Now, increasingly smaller networks are creating all the additional value. The next big thing will be home networking. It will connect all our devices in the house together to work in sync.

It might be hard to see the benefits of this straight away. What could our telephones have to do with our digital TV at all? Just to give you an idea, below are a few ways in which wireless technologies can be used at home:

* You won't be needing your phone at all when you can use your cable broadband to dial through VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Over the internet, you can call for free and even have video chats - an ideal way of keeping in touch with friends and family who live far away.

* All the music you have stored on your computer or you stream online, you can listen to it through to your speakers anywhere in the house. With new technology, you no longer need cables connecting the devices. There is already a wide range of hardware available to get you started.

* Download TV programmes or movies to your computer and then watch them on any screen in the house. However, don't expect perfect performance yet in this area: networks are getting more powerful all the time, but smooth wireless video streaming is, at present, difficult to achieve.

* An increasing number of household goods - digital TVs, computers, lights, speakers, etc. - will be equipped with wireless technologies enabling them to talk to each other.

* You'll be able to keep tabs on your home, and monitor any activity that takes place on the street near your home, or simply see who's arriving at the front door.

* Manage your air conditioning and house lighting from a centralised place, even when you are away from home.

* Advanced washing machines and other domestic goods with sophisticated electronic components will be wireless-equipped so that they can be maintained or have new features automatically installed. - 33366
